From iTunes Music’s tweet, I came up with this post to honor the 50th anniversary of “Garota de Ipanema” (“The Girl from Ipanema”). It’s a well-known bossa nova song, written in 1962 (music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes) and became a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s that won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965.  English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel.

The first commercial recording was in 1962, by Pery Ribeiro. Video by IrisAyameIris.

The song was inspired by Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto (now Helô Pinheiro), a seventeen-year-old girl living on Montenegro Street in the fashionable Ipanema district in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The version performed by Astrud Gilberto, along with João Gilberto and Stan Getz, from the 1964 album Getz/Gilberto, became an international hit, reaching number five in the United States pop chart, number 29 in the United Kingdom, and charting highly throughout the world. iTunes Music also shared a link where you can download Girl from Ipanema’s cover versions HERE featuring multi-awarded artists. Now asking myself too with whose version is best? Along with its many versions available in mind and in YouTube, here’s our top favorite:

Ella Fitzgerald. Video by zachariusz.

Sergio Mendes. Video by LovelySelyn.

Amy Winehouse. Video by AmyWinehouseOFICIAL.

Lisa Ono. Video by Cuvota.

And a version from our own, Philippines’ Queen of Bossa Nova, Sitti. You can also download this song HERE. Video by garyd4u.
