Mantis: Domino’s Electropop Domination
Lally Buendia also known as Domino, the sister of rock icon Ely Buendia, is gearing up for a return to center stage in the local music scene with a new studio album. Ten years after Fair Tales released under Viva Records, synthpop artist Domino was lucky to have worked with a motley crew of brilliant artists in the music scene - Ely Buendia (Pupil, The Oktaves), Pat Tirano (TOI), Jerome Velasco (Daydream Cycle), Jazz Nicolas (The Itchyworms), Mikey Amistoso (Ciudad, Hamlah+Gabi), and Eric Perlas (COG) who co-produced the album. Japs Sergio (Peso Movement, Daydream Cycle) co-wrote 2 songs and Aldus Santos (The Purplechickens) wrote a track and recorded guitars and vocals for it. Clem Castro (The Camerawalls) and Wendell Garcia (Pupil) also played on a couple of tracks.
Mantis is a 10-track, all-original album written by singer-songwriter Domino herself. She’s comfortable and confident singing her own songs that’s why she choose to performing OPM more than covers. The album is a proclaimation of OPM’s new era of female electropop which include tracks like “I Love You, But I’m Driving”, “His Song”, “Veil”, “I Die Each Time”, “Eight Days”, “Fairchild”, “Oath”, “This Furious Now”, “To Thunder” and “Dites-moi”.
Mantis’ first single, I Love You, But I’m Driving, video below courtesy of mcamusic.
Domino’s music is a fusion of everything, 80s electropop with jazz, rock, house and new wave, name it, it’s in the album. Hers was a music-i’ll-never-thought-of-liking-it but after listening to the songs live and the album, i find it very melodic, desirable and seductive.
I’m one lucky person to interview this shy doll before she made a splash with live performances into her album launch in SM North EDSA last 17 May 2013. More photos HERE. With her electropop reincarnation and eclectic musical style, she looks up to following the breakthrough success of Lady Gaga and Jessie J, an inspiration who’s exemplary in staging live performances. She also talked about the music she grew up with. Britpop Blurr was her music hero who’s popular also of electronic sounds. In OPM, she rediscovered her love for Itchyworms music with the band’s new album After All This Time.
Mantis by Domino is now out in CDs at leading record stores nationwide under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines). It is also available digitally via iTunes HERE.

Support Ely Buendia’s new band album out now entitled The Oktaves!
Checkout our recent post HERE about Ely Buendia Sings His Greatest Hits Live.
The Oktaves, MCA Music’s latest superband, successfully launched their self-titled debut album last 17 Feb 2013 at the Glorietta New Activity Center. Headed by Ely Buendia (vocals/ guitars), one of the most influential rock icons in the country, the band is composed of musicians Nitoy Adriano (guitars), a legendary blues guitarist best known for his long stint with The Jerks, Chris Padilla (vocals/ guitars), Ivan Garcia (bass) and Bobby Padilla (drums) broke into the scene just a couple of years ago with their fresh take on rockabilly with their band Hilera.

In the launch, The Oktaves performed all 12 tracks from the album including their hit track “K.U.P.A.L.” and the new single “Paakyat Ka Pa Lang, Pababa Na Ako (video below courtesy of elyfer08).” Likewise, The Oktaves Album Bundle, which consists of The Oktaves album, limited edition T-Shirt and poster, was made available exclusively during the launch. Buyers of the album bundle had a grand time as they were able to meet and greet the band during the photo session after the show.
Here’s The Oktaves’ KPL, video courtesy of mcamusic.
The album deconstructs modern rock into a collection of songs which represent country, blues, and rockabilly with touches of everything else in between. It may be stripped down rock music but there is nothing simple about these songs. The complexity and depth of the lyrics and melodies show the experience and sheer musical talent of each individual member of the band.
Ely Buendia and Chris Padilla share singing duties where each vocalist sings the songs which he composed. Buendia lends a country feel with “Olivia” while Padilla shifts to blues with “Ikot”. They also each pen faster, heavier songs like “Gone, Gone, Gone” and “Hold on Tight”. The partnership between the two resulted in a medley of unique tunes but with a coherent sound which is reminiscent of the legendary pairing of Lennon and McCartney. Old and new fans including fellow musicians have been treated to several live performances in the past few months and the buzz around this band has been tremendous.
The Oktaves is now out in CDs under MCA Music at Astroplus, Odyssey and SM Record Bar. It is also available digitally via iTunes and MyMusicStore. The event was presented by MCA Music, Ayala Malls, Glorietta in cooperation with Red Box, Astroplus, Businessworld and Herword.com.
