MYX Music Awards 2013: An insight to my experienceby Ruby Alvez

“This is awesome!!!”
It’s the first phrase that popped in my head when I was finally inside the Music Museum to witness the annually held MYX Music Awards.  (Well, minus the run-in with the security people. haha!)
I have never been in this “kind” of event, ever before and I was thankful that my friend invited me to come and experience it firsthand.  I was truly hesitant at first (and I even mistook it for another day!), but then I thought, “What the heck, right? It should be fun.”  And fun (and more), it is, indeed.
MYX Music Awards, already on its 8th year, is one of the music industry’s award-giving body in the Philippines, which honors the country’s biggest hitmakers — by giving the viewers the power to decide the winners themselves in 19 categories through SMS and online voting.
The theme of the night was the 80’s and it was great to see some of the artists joining the bandwagon and dressed up for the occasion, led by the VJs themselves who were, I must say, all fabulous.
Beatbox Philippines (who were such scene-stealers!), Yeng Constantino, Princess Velasco, Robin Nievera, Sam Concepcion, Anja Aguilar, KZ Tandingan, Zendee, Kean Cipriano and Elmo Magalona jumpstarted the night by performing the nominees for the Favorite Song category. We also got a taste of Abra’s rapping ingenuity by performing with Rhay Ty, Jose Amarra and Quest.  And of course, a taste of the 80’s via the Neocolours and Menudo’s “If You’re Not Here” with a twist – not only on the song, but the hilarious costume as well – by Kamikazee, Hilera, and Typecast.
But the highlight of my night was the tribute to the MYXMagna Awardee for 2013 – Ms. Lea Salonga.
I had the once-in-a-lifetime chance of watching Lea Salonga when she comprised her role as ‘Kim’ in the well-loved musical ‘Miss Saigon’ when it was brought here in the Philippines back in 2001.  The first musical I ever watched in my life.  And the moment I became a fan of Lea Salonga.
Julie Ann San Jose sang “I Am But A Small Voice”; Erik Santos and K-La Rivera, “A Whole New World”; Juris and Richard Poon, “We Could Be In Love”; Nikki Gil, “Reflection”; and Christian Bautista & Rachelle Ann Go, “Sun And Moon” from the musical “Miss Saigon” were among those who performed to honor Lea Salonga with renditions of her popular songs and then came together to sing “Tagumpay Nating Lahat”.  On a side note, it was delightful to see Lea giggling like a teenager at the sight of Christian Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go singing together.
The internationally acclaimed artist — with a 35-year career to boot — had this to say to those who aspire to join the music industry, “Have an effin’ time doing this.  Love this more than anything else. There can be nothing else. If you have the passion, you belong here.”
Gloc-9 was the biggest winner of the night by bagging three (3) of the awards – Favorite Song (Sirena with Ebe Dancel), Favorite MYX Live! Performance and Favorite Collaboration (Sirena with Ebe Dancel). Sarah Geronimo, Julie Anne San Jose and Abra claimed two awards each, while Christian Bautista, Yeng Constantino and Daniel Padilla were named Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Female Artist and Favorite New Artist, respectively.  Below are the complete list of winners.
It was a stellar night.  A wonderful experience I would love to repeat.  It may be lacking on some parts (more preparation, maybe? and better artists attendance, perhaps? But generally, I think it was a success.  And whoever said that OPM is dead is dead wrong.  It will never die. Seeing the influx of artists – the old and the new – still striving to contribute their earnest talents, I believe that the music industry in the Philippines has come such a long way.

More MYX Music Awards 2012 Happenings MYX Music Awards 2013: An insight to my experienceby Ruby Alvez

GOD OF CARNAGE
July 2012

thestagedoorcanteen:

Announcement: Atlantis Productions’ GOD OF CARNAGE

Finally! A teaser photo for Atlantis Productions’ God of Carnage! It stars Lea Salonga and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo! What more can you ask for? We definitely are very excited for this one! Also, this is what you call a good promo material.

It plays in Manila, July 2012 and November in Singapore.

God of Carnage is a self-proclaimed “comedy of manners…without manners.” Written by Parisian Yasmina Resa and translated by Christopher Hampton the production stars Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Lea Salonga as parents who have more in common with their children than they might suspect. God of Carnage begins after a playground fight between two boys, and follows two sets of parents as they attempt to resolve the children’s altercation, but instead devolve into chaos.

Lea Salonga’s THE JOURNEY SO FAR

Recorded at New York’s Café Carlyle, Lea Salonga’s latest CD entitled The Journey So Far features favorite tracks from throughout Lea’s career; a mix of Broadway, jazz, pop and cabaret standards. The Journey So Far, the new live CD from veteran Broadway and Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga, the Filipina singer and actress who is best known for originating the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon (and for which she won the Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk Outer Critics and Theatre World Awards). Says Salonga, “We wanted to make this recording something very personal, touching on my life as well as my career. There are songs from my homeland, musical theater, film, and the jazz and pop worlds…this is more than just a recording; it’s a memento, a lasting souvenir of this very special time in my life.”

Musical director Larry Yurman on piano, Jack Cavari on guitar, John Miller on bass, and Dave Ratajczak on drums. “The Journey So Far” features such timeless classics as “My Romance,” “Let’s Fall In Love,” “Someone To Watch Over Me,” “Salamat Salamat Musika,” “I Have Dreamed,” “Something’s Coming” and “There’ll Be Time.”
