The Great Gatsby movie soundtrack encompasses the broad spectrum of musical styles represented in this energetic re-telling of the classic text. Drawing on his unique and unrivalled position in popular culture, JAY Z (with collaborator and the film’s executive music consultant Jeymes Samuel) has worked with Luhrmann and his team on the project over the past two years, translating the Jazz Age sensibility of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel into the musical equivalents of our own times, through the blending of hip-hop, traditional jazz and other contemporary musical textures. Luhrmann stated, “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is peppered with contemporary music references specific to the story’s setting of 1922. While we acknowledge, as Fitzgerald phrased it, ‘the Jazz Age,’ and this is the period represented on screen, we—our audience—are living in the ‘hip-hop age’ and want our viewers to feel the impact of modern-day music the way Fitzgerald did for the readers of his novel at the time of its publication.

The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one’s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. It’s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. This film’s vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience,” JAY Z said in a previous statement.

JAY Z’s own “No Church in the Wild,” which he was recording when he and Luhrmann first came together, is included in the film, along with his original “100$ Bill.” The first single to drop is the hauntingly melodious track “Young and Beautiful,” from recent Brit Award winner for Best International Female Solo Artist, Lana Del Rey. Del Rey said, “It was an honor to work with Baz Lurhmann on his amazing adaptation of one of the most extraordinary books ever written. The movie is highly glamorous and exciting; Rick Nowels and I were thrilled to write the song for the film.” Moviegoers will also recognize a few favorites with a new twist, such as Jack White’s interpretation of U2’s “Love Is Blindness,” Beyoncé x André 3000 collaborating on Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black,” and Bryan Ferry’s new take on a couple of classics: his own “Love Is The Drug,” and, with Emeli Sandé, Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.” New songs by Florence + The Machine, Lana Del Rey, Nero, will.i.am and The xx were written for scenes in the film, and appear on the soundtrack.

Lifehouse, the million-selling recording and live act has gotten back to its roots mindset-wise which significantly helped produced its latest album touted by both band insiders and tough crack critics as their “most daring and provocative release to date.” 

Almeria, the name of the group’s sixth album, was crafted without the distractions usually brought by in-between touring and personal struggles that cuff the workflow of successful talents. The band worked with producers and co-writers Jude Cole and Jacob Kasher and A-list performers Peter Frampton and Natasha Bedingfield. 

“It’s almost like we were reverting back to being teenagers in our parents’ garages, which felt really good,” frontman Jason Wade is quoted as saying. “We thought we were making this cool, 70s kind. We knew we had to shake things up creatively and go back to the drawing board, try something new.”

Released by MCA Music Philippines, “Almeria” is expected to be a hit among his fans in the country who always anticipate the progression of creativity in the band’s material. Equally interesting are tracks “Nobody Listen” and “You’re The One” which Wade proudly noted as tracks that “just kind of came to life.” It is revealed that for these songs he wrote through a process he never did before, he just “went in with this blank canvas and started throwing stuff down on tape.”

Lawson, pop rock London-based sensation is coming to town, ending speculation of such tickling possibility and turning it into a fan frenzy that promises a beautiful mayhem once the group meets their Filipino fans face-to-face.

They will be performing at Eastwood Mall Open Park in Libis, an intimate venue but has an expected heavy crowd of delirious fans, on 9 April 2013 at 7pm. 

“It shall be a dream come true to do a couple of shows there. We want to go to as many places as we can and we heard Philippines is a very good scene music-wise,” said 22-year old lead guitarist Joel Peat. The statement came in a past interview when the chance of them coming to Manila was still being cooked and not yet finalized. 

Now the dream for their multitude of young Filipino fans will finally become a reality. Lawson fans will be able to meet their heroes in flesh, alive and giving melodic music that inspires the heart and rocks the soul.

Lawson, its name paying tribute to a real-life doctor who saved the life of their vocalist Andy Brown from death scare, scored hit singles recently, namely, “When She Was Mine,” (which immediately became high-rated on YouTube in just a week after being posted) “Taking Over Me,” and “Standing In The Dark.” “Completing the band roster are bassist Ryan Fletcher, who has been jamming with Joel since they were 14, and drummer Adam Pitts.

The Oktaves, MCA Music’s latest superband, successfully launched their self-titled debut album last 17 Feb 2013 at the Glorietta New Activity Center. Headed by Ely Buendia (vocals/ guitars), one of the most influential rock icons in the country, the band is composed of musicians Nitoy Adriano (guitars), a legendary blues guitarist best known for his long stint with The Jerks, Chris Padilla (vocals/ guitars), Ivan Garcia (bass) and Bobby Padilla (drums) broke into the scene just a couple of years ago with their fresh take on rockabilly with their band Hilera.

In the launch, The Oktaves performed all 12 tracks from the album including their hit track “K.U.P.A.L.” and the new single “Paakyat Ka Pa Lang, Pababa Na Ako (video below courtesy of elyfer08).” Likewise, The Oktaves Album Bundle, which consists of The Oktaves album, limited edition T-Shirt and poster, was made available exclusively during the launch. Buyers of the album bundle had a grand time as they were able to meet and greet the band during the photo session after the show.

The album deconstructs modern rock into a collection of songs which represent country, blues, and rockabilly with touches of everything else in between. It may be stripped down rock music but there is nothing simple about these songs.  The complexity and depth of the lyrics and melodies show the experience and sheer musical talent of each individual member of the band.

Ely Buendia and Chris Padilla share singing duties where each vocalist sings the songs which he composed. Buendia lends a country feel with “Olivia” while Padilla shifts to blues with “Ikot”. They also each pen faster, heavier songs like “Gone, Gone, Gone” and “Hold on Tight”. The partnership between the two resulted in a medley of unique tunes but with a coherent sound which is reminiscent of the legendary pairing of Lennon and McCartney. Old and new fans including fellow musicians have been treated to several live performances in the past few months and the buzz around this band has been tremendous.

As with “Amore,” which featured timeless masterworks, “Passione” includes several beloved classics such as “Love Me Tender,” “Girl From Ipanema,” and “Sarà Settembre,” (better known to English-speaking audiences as Neil Diamond’s “September Morn”).  Jennifer Lopez is featured on the soft and sensual track “Quizás Quizás Quizás” and Nelly Furtado joins Bocelli on “Corcovado.”  The album also features Chris Botti  in “When I Fall In Love” and a duet with the late French chanteuse Edith Piaf on the song “La Vie En Rose.” On the album, Bocelli sings in six languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Neapolitan) with his unmistakable voice, as Foster accompanies him on piano, along with Peruvian guitarist Ramon Stagnaro. The sensual sound is rounded out by Cuban, Brazilian, and Portuguese rhythms and a 63-piece orchestra recorded in London.
