Mantis: Domino’s Electropop Domination
Lally Buendia also known as Domino, the sister of rock icon Ely Buendia, is gearing up for a return to center stage in the local music scene with a new studio album. Ten years after Fair Tales released under Viva Records, synthpop artist Domino was lucky to have worked with a motley crew of brilliant artists in the music scene - Ely Buendia (Pupil, The Oktaves), Pat Tirano (TOI), Jerome Velasco (Daydream Cycle), Jazz Nicolas (The Itchyworms), Mikey Amistoso (Ciudad, Hamlah+Gabi), and Eric Perlas (COG) who co-produced the album. Japs Sergio (Peso Movement, Daydream Cycle) co-wrote 2 songs and Aldus Santos (The Purplechickens) wrote a track and recorded guitars and vocals for it. Clem Castro (The Camerawalls) and Wendell Garcia (Pupil) also played on a couple of tracks.
Mantis is a 10-track, all-original album written by singer-songwriter Domino herself. She’s comfortable and confident singing her own songs that’s why she choose to performing OPM more than covers. The album is a proclaimation of OPM’s new era of female electropop which include tracks like “I Love You, But I’m Driving”, “His Song”, “Veil”, “I Die Each Time”, “Eight Days”, “Fairchild”, “Oath”, “This Furious Now”, “To Thunder” and “Dites-moi”.
Mantis’ first single, I Love You, But I’m Driving, video below courtesy of mcamusic.
Domino’s music is a fusion of everything, 80s electropop with jazz, rock, house and new wave, name it, it’s in the album. Hers was a music-i’ll-never-thought-of-liking-it but after listening to the songs live and the album, i find it very melodic, desirable and seductive.
I’m one lucky person to interview this shy doll before she made a splash with live performances into her album launch in SM North EDSA last 17 May 2013. More photos HERE. With her electropop reincarnation and eclectic musical style, she looks up to following the breakthrough success of Lady Gaga and Jessie J, an inspiration who’s exemplary in staging live performances. She also talked about the music she grew up with. Britpop Blurr was her music hero who’s popular also of electronic sounds. In OPM, she rediscovered her love for Itchyworms music with the band’s new album After All This Time.
Mantis by Domino is now out in CDs at leading record stores nationwide under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines). It is also available digitally via iTunes HERE.

The Great Gatsby Soundtrack features the new music of Lana Del Rey, Gotye, Florence + The Machine, Will.I.Am, The XX, Fergie + Q Tip + Goonrock and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, now available in your favorite record stores.
The movie will be in theaters on 17 May 2013, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Elizabeth Debicki, Amitabh Bachchan and more, official trailer below courtesy of TheHollywoodBird.
The Great Gatsby movie soundtrack encompasses the broad spectrum of musical styles represented in this energetic re-telling of the classic text. Drawing on his unique and unrivalled position in popular culture, JAY Z (with collaborator and the film’s executive music consultant Jeymes Samuel) has worked with Luhrmann and his team on the project over the past two years, translating the Jazz Age sensibility of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel into the musical equivalents of our own times, through the blending of hip-hop, traditional jazz and other contemporary musical textures. Luhrmann stated, “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is peppered with contemporary music references specific to the story’s setting of 1922. While we acknowledge, as Fitzgerald phrased it, ‘the Jazz Age,’ and this is the period represented on screen, we—our audience—are living in the ‘hip-hop age’ and want our viewers to feel the impact of modern-day music the way Fitzgerald did for the readers of his novel at the time of its publication.
The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one’s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. It’s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist. This film’s vision and direction has all the makings of an epic experience,” JAY Z said in a previous statement.
JAY Z’s own “No Church in the Wild,” which he was recording when he and Luhrmann first came together, is included in the film, along with his original “100$ Bill.” The first single to drop is the hauntingly melodious track “Young and Beautiful,” from recent Brit Award winner for Best International Female Solo Artist, Lana Del Rey. Del Rey said, “It was an honor to work with Baz Lurhmann on his amazing adaptation of one of the most extraordinary books ever written. The movie is highly glamorous and exciting; Rick Nowels and I were thrilled to write the song for the film.” Moviegoers will also recognize a few favorites with a new twist, such as Jack White’s interpretation of U2’s “Love Is Blindness,” Beyoncé x André 3000 collaborating on Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black,” and Bryan Ferry’s new take on a couple of classics: his own “Love Is The Drug,” and, with Emeli Sandé, Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.” New songs by Florence + The Machine, Lana Del Rey, Nero, will.i.am and The xx were written for scenes in the film, and appear on the soundtrack.
The full track list for “The Great Gatsby” standard soundtrack album is as follows:
1. 100$ Bill - JAY Z
2. Back To Black - Beyoncé x André 3000
3. Bang Bang - will.i.am
4. A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got) - Fergie + Q Tip + GoonRock
5. Young And Beautiful - Lana Del Rey
6. Love Is The Drug - Bryan Ferry with The Bryan Ferry Orchestra
7. Over The Love - Florence + The Machine
8. Where The Wind Blows - Coco O. of Quadron
9. Crazy in Love - Emeli Sandé and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra
10. Together – The xx
11. Hearts A Mess - Gotye
12. Love Is Blindness – Jack White
13. Into the Past - Nero
14. Kill and Run – Sia

Avicii Live in Manila
15 May 2013 | MOA Arena | 9pm
Grammy-nominated Avicii - born Tim Bergling - is best known for his acclaimed live performances and for international mega-hit ‘Levels,’ hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as “one of the Princes of the contemporary renaissance of EDM.” It conquered club charts worldwide, racked up over 50 million YouTube views, and was declared David Guetta’s “Tune of 2011” in DJ Mag. Following an intense and prolific touring schedule as well as the worldwide release of his summer smash hit ‘Silhouettes’ this year, the Swede soared to No.3 in the 2012 DJ Mag poll of the Top 100 DJs after just three years of performing.
He headlined the Ultra Music Festival 2012, Tomorrow land, Electric Daisy Carnival and Lollapallooza, while his first summer residency at Ushuaïa Beach Hotel in Ibiza smashed the party island to smithereens.
Avicii is also one of the genre’s most sought after collaborators. His ‘Superlove’ collaboration with Lenny Kravitz and remix of Madonna’s ‘Girls Gone Wild’ are among the most acclaimed tracks this year. Video below by aviciideo.
To put it lightly, what Avicii and his manager Ash has managed to achieve in just a few years is truly astonishing. Commencing his dizzying journey at the tender age of 18, the self-taught, fresh-faced Swedish luminary has unquestionably amassed greater success before turning 22 than most could ever hope to achieve in a lifetime.
The mastermind behind smash hit phenomena Seek Bromance, Levels and Fade into Darkness and chief collaborator for the chart topping My Feelings for You, he has soared from budding bedroom music-maker to international electronic sensation in a matter of years, and already stands shoulder-to-shoulder with just a handful of the most in-demand and elite DJs on the planet. We can only dare to imagine what will be accomplished in a whole career…
The partnership between himself and manager Ash has flourished beyond all expectations – the unrelenting Avicii continues to masterfully hone his unique brand of high-octane, melodic house music, while the successes flood in.
Amongst others, it was his critically acclaimed Muja EP and smash hit Ryu (which became Pete Tong’s “Essential New Tune” and Tiesto’s “Track Of The Week”) that led Avicii to even greater accomplishment, as in 2009 he was crowned “Breakthrough Producer/DJ of the Year” in DJ Magazine’s ‘Top 100’ special edition, and “The Swedish Future” in ‘Only for DJs’ Magazine (FR). These were exciting times for the youngster, and consistently exquisite production outputs flowed thick and fast, but it was the events of the following Summer that truly took him to the next level as an artist, as the Swedish superstar sought a little bit of bromance.
Video below is Tim Berg’s Seek Bromance courtesy of datarecordsuk.
Released under his alias, and quasi-namesake, ‘Tim Berg’, the triumphant phenomenon that was Seek Bromance saw the plucky Swede escalated to previously unbeknownst heights and out-right superstardom, as the track became the international dance anthem for the summer. Reaching Number 1 Beatport status after just two days, it climbed to top ten in the official national charts of ten countries across the globe – an achievement unheard-of for even the biggest of dance music megastars. Just a month later, his smash hit collaboration with Sebastian Drums My Feelings For You, reached the coveted Number 1 spot once again, remaining there for an astonishing 5 weeks. By the end of summer 2010, Tim Berg, Avicii, Tim Bergling – whatever you may choose to call him – were the words on everybody’s lips and demand soured!
MCA Music and Republiq, World Wide Womb and Driven Manila presents Avicii Live in Manila, May 15, 2013 - 9:00pm, Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City.

Soul Adventurer: Franco Reyes’ Recognition to Good Vibes
Franco who’s famous for his rock alternative music with reggae fusion, owned songs of distinct guitar riffs representing his signature sound evident in his Soul Adventurer album, launched at the solo concert in Music Museum. Provided an inviting fine tune and a music influence spreading good vibrations driving his fans and listeners an amazing rocksteady support.

Soul Adventurer is Franco’s musical journey, a comeback after the 2010 release. Its a 17-track album, recorded with no all-star line-up and supported by musicians Paul Canada, Victor Guison and Dave Elfin. The song Drifter has a laid back vibe with the wave sound on it, Better Days and Renewal also had some cool island beats. Checkout his carrier single Better Days, its beautiful music video shot in Baler featuring surfboards, beach, waves and good times. Video below by mcamusic.
He explained, “That song talks about life experiences that everyone can relate to and how we can make everything positive despite the negativity we encounter daily, on how we can find inner peace and finding our true selves and true purpose in the midst of chaos, and that is to spread love, peace and harmony with everything around us. ‘Soul adventurer’ is like a self-journey to finding what the meaning of our lives and finding inner peace.”
For Franco the second track “To Survive” best represents the mood of the album. “To survive/ we pick up all the pieces to survive/ We learn from all our mistakes to make it magical, less visual,” its about getting the most out of life.

Lawson’s Chapman Square: The Pop Rock Music Worth Listening To
Catchy pop style, mellow form of rock, lyrics you can easily sing along with and a good recall of the melody makes Chapman Square a worth listening album. With their impressive upbeat variety of rock, top favorite songs include Standing In The Dark, Gone and Taking Over Me. It’s an 18-track album, songs mostly written by Andy Brown, composed of 2 CDs with an acoustic version of songs Taking Over Me and When She Was Mine.
Lawson Live! in Manila offered 3 kinds of concert passes with its respective CD bundles, Filipino fans support were tremendous. Fans get to own Lawson’s Chapman Square album and poster with exclusive fan meet and autograph signing opportunity. Lawson concert performance in Eastwood Mall Open park as they enjoyed immense popularity and huge following among local music fans.

Lifehouse, the million-selling recording and live act has gotten back to its roots mindset-wise which significantly helped produced its latest album touted by both band insiders and tough crack critics as their “most daring and provocative release to date.”
Almeria, the name of the group’s sixth album, was crafted without the distractions usually brought by in-between touring and personal struggles that cuff the workflow of successful talents. The band worked with producers and co-writers Jude Cole and Jacob Kasher and A-list performers Peter Frampton and Natasha Bedingfield.
“It’s almost like we were reverting back to being teenagers in our parents’ garages, which felt really good,” frontman Jason Wade is quoted as saying. “We thought we were making this cool, 70s kind. We knew we had to shake things up creatively and go back to the drawing board, try something new.”
If there’s any indication of such approach, the first single “Between The Raindrops” right away sent that into the air, with inspired songwriting sparked by that “reverberating melody in Jason’s head” and three and a half months of “developing the track” and “honing the lyrics,” care of the whole band. Video below courtesy of LifehouseVEVO.
Released by MCA Music Philippines, “Almeria” is expected to be a hit among his fans in the country who always anticipate the progression of creativity in the band’s material. Equally interesting are tracks “Nobody Listen” and “You’re The One” which Wade proudly noted as tracks that “just kind of came to life.” It is revealed that for these songs he wrote through a process he never did before, he just “went in with this blank canvas and started throwing stuff down on tape.”
“Right Back Home” on the other hand, features the legendary Peter Frampton who “completely mesmerized the room as the band watched him perform his solo and vocal.” Wade’s vocal and the band’s energetic sound complemented well with Frampton’s contribution. Video below courtesy of Booktobigscreen.
Wade and his comrades, drummer Rick Woolstenhulme, Jr., and current bassist Bryce Soderberg and guitarist Ben Carey, emerged from Los Angeles during the late 90s. Then their signature song “Hanging By a Moment” became Billboard magazine’s 2000 Hot 100 chart Song of the Year. Their music has been heard in TV shows like “Smallville,” “Falcon Beach,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scrubs,” “One Tree Hill,” “Criminal Minds” and many others, as well as in films like “The Time Traveler’s Wife.”
Lifehouse has sold more than 15 million records with hits, also including “You and Me,” “First Time,” “Whatever It Takes”, “Halfway Gone” and “Sick Cycle Carousel.” You and Me video courtesy of LifehouseVEVO.
Wade, emphasizing how focus they are on their craft these days, shared, “I don’t even remember a lot of the shows back then because I never planned on doing that. I was just a kid in my room with my guitar and a couple of songs.”
Now the band has “well-adjusted and grown into a strong, tight and perpetually ambitious concern.”
LIFEHOUSE Album “ALMERIA” under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines), is now available in all record stores nationwide and online via iTunes.
Ariana Grande has premiered her anxiously awaited new single, “The Way” (Featuring Mac Miller), on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS FM morning show “On-Air With Ryan Seacrest” on 3/25th. As soon as it hit the airwaves, #theway became the number one trending topic on Twitter worldwide. Upon becoming available on iTunes and all digital retailers the same day, “The Way” skyrocketed to the coveted #1 spot on iTunes Overall Chart in less than 8-hours, besting the likes of P!nk, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Rihanna. GRANDE currently has the fastest growing single from a new artist in 2013.
It’s a sweet, slick, and soulful anthem showcasing GRANDE’s impressive vocal range. Featuring piping hot production from Harmony Samuels [Maroon 5, Mary J. Blige] and penned by Jordin Sparks and Sevyn Streeter, “The Way” proves to be a pop powerhouse in its own right. The singer’s voice shines, while Mac Miller drops a raucous verse. It’s the perfect way to meet the young diva. In addition, the track’s music video, directed by Jones Crow will make its VEVO debut on March 28.
Actress and singer Grande rose to immense popularity starring in the hit Nickelodeon show Victorious. In addition, her spin-off Sam & Cat is set to premiere on Nickelodeon in Fall 2013. Singing and performing since the age of eight, music remains GRANDE’s first love. Over the course of her career, she carved out an overwhelming fan base online. The Huffington Post listed her as the “Third Most Influential Actress Online” above Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Anniston, while Billboard even dubbed her “Most Influential Person to Watch Online”. To date, she has amassed 5 million Twitter followers, 3 million Facebook likes, 3 million Instagram followers, and 150 million YouTube/VEVO views.
She was also featured in Mika’s new single entitled Popular Song which offers a fresh twist on “Popular” from the Broadway hit “Wicked”, composed by Stephen Schwartz. MIKA tapped the charismatic and charming actress/singer Ariana Grande for the song, which showcases a powerful interplay between the two singers. Grande’s successful co-starring role on the hit show, Victorious, recently led to her own spin-off for Nickelodeon, Sam & Cat. Grande’s presence extends far beyond her television notoriety. She’s also a highly talented and accredited singer, who’s debut album—due out 2013 via Republic Records— has her poised to become a major player in popular music.
Now it’s ARIANA GRANDE’s time to make a gigantic splash in the world of music. Buy Ariana’s single The Way via iTunes HERE.
Lawson, pop rock London-based sensation is coming to town, ending speculation of such tickling possibility and turning it into a fan frenzy that promises a beautiful mayhem once the group meets their Filipino fans face-to-face.
They will be performing at Eastwood Mall Open Park in Libis, an intimate venue but has an expected heavy crowd of delirious fans, on 9 April 2013 at 7pm.
“It shall be a dream come true to do a couple of shows there. We want to go to as many places as we can and we heard Philippines is a very good scene music-wise,” said 22-year old lead guitarist Joel Peat. The statement came in a past interview when the chance of them coming to Manila was still being cooked and not yet finalized.
Now the dream for their multitude of young Filipino fans will finally become a reality. Lawson fans will be able to meet their heroes in flesh, alive and giving melodic music that inspires the heart and rocks the soul.
Lawson, its name paying tribute to a real-life doctor who saved the life of their vocalist Andy Brown from death scare, scored hit singles recently, namely, “When She Was Mine,” (which immediately became high-rated on YouTube in just a week after being posted) “Taking Over Me,” and “Standing In The Dark.” “Completing the band roster are bassist Ryan Fletcher, who has been jamming with Joel since they were 14, and drummer Adam Pitts.
“I think the band is working under a perfect system where we got individual roles to fulfill and we’re not bothered by it. It’s cool that Andy is our singer-songwriter and he is the eldest,” stated Fletcher.
Lawson’s album “Chapman Square” is now seated comfortably high on the album charts, currently climbing the iTunes charts too in UK and Asia. The band’s singles “Taking Over Me” and “Standing In The Dark” are now certified hits and have both reached the Number 1 spot on Philippine Radio and Music Channels. Video below by LawsonVEVO.

The Oktaves, MCA Music’s latest superband, successfully launched their self-titled debut album last 17 Feb 2013 at the Glorietta New Activity Center. Headed by Ely Buendia (vocals/ guitars), one of the most influential rock icons in the country, the band is composed of musicians Nitoy Adriano (guitars), a legendary blues guitarist best known for his long stint with The Jerks, Chris Padilla (vocals/ guitars), Ivan Garcia (bass) and Bobby Padilla (drums) broke into the scene just a couple of years ago with their fresh take on rockabilly with their band Hilera.
In the launch, The Oktaves performed all 12 tracks from the album including their hit track “K.U.P.A.L.” and the new single “Paakyat Ka Pa Lang, Pababa Na Ako (video below courtesy of elyfer08).” Likewise, The Oktaves Album Bundle, which consists of The Oktaves album, limited edition T-Shirt and poster, was made available exclusively during the launch. Buyers of the album bundle had a grand time as they were able to meet and greet the band during the photo session after the show.
Here’s The Oktaves’ KPL, video courtesy of mcamusic.
The album deconstructs modern rock into a collection of songs which represent country, blues, and rockabilly with touches of everything else in between. It may be stripped down rock music but there is nothing simple about these songs. The complexity and depth of the lyrics and melodies show the experience and sheer musical talent of each individual member of the band.
Ely Buendia and Chris Padilla share singing duties where each vocalist sings the songs which he composed. Buendia lends a country feel with “Olivia” while Padilla shifts to blues with “Ikot”. They also each pen faster, heavier songs like “Gone, Gone, Gone” and “Hold on Tight”. The partnership between the two resulted in a medley of unique tunes but with a coherent sound which is reminiscent of the legendary pairing of Lennon and McCartney. Old and new fans including fellow musicians have been treated to several live performances in the past few months and the buzz around this band has been tremendous.
The Oktaves is now out in CDs under MCA Music at Astroplus, Odyssey and SM Record Bar. It is also available digitally via iTunes and MyMusicStore. The event was presented by MCA Music, Ayala Malls, Glorietta in cooperation with Red Box, Astroplus, Businessworld and Herword.com.

Watch Girl’s Generation music video of Dancing Queen below courtesy of SMTOWN.
The carrier track “Dancing Queen” is an adaptation of a Duffy original “Mercy”, which given a special “twist” that only a super girl group like Girls Generation can pull off. The song was recorded in 2008, which somehow defines the group’s bashful persona.
The concept of G.G’s 4th album I GOT A BOY is “Time goes through past, present & future”. “Dancing Queen”, as the lead carrier ushers in more awesome surprises! The 2008 shooting video is a big gift to all fans.
A Messenger: Colton Dixon’s Debut Release
by Len Armea
American Idol Season 11 Finalist Colton Dixon is here in Manila to promote his debut album entitled “A Messenger” as well as to show his full support to fellow AI finalist Jessica Sanchez at her upcoming concert at the Big Dome on February 14.
The 21-year-old rocker from Tennessee, who’s known for his Christian music, has 13 songs from his album distributed in the Philippines by MCA Music. His two singles “Never Gone” and “You Are” are both doing well in the music charts.
In fact, Never Gone sold 21, 000 units during the first week of release and got an instant success on iTunes Christian and Gospel Singles chart, Billboard’s Christian Digital Songs and Christian/Gospel Digital song charts. Meanwhile, You Are also hit #1 on the same charts and was selected as USA Today’s Song of the Week upon its digital release October 30.
Colton, who looks up to Chris Daughtry, Coldplay, Lifehouse, Switchfoot as his musical influences, is proud of his debut album because it is through this that he was able to fulfill his unexpected calling.
“We’ve all been deep in that valley, and I know what I’ve been through. Whenever I’m in those dark places, I feel that God has pulled me through, and I want to inspire others by telling them about my experiences. That’s the central message of A Messenger. Those who never saw me on Idol will get to know where my heart lies pretty fast when they listen. Musically, I also think that it’s important to present a vibe that has a unique and fresh energy and point of view.”
Colton also acknowledges his Filipino fans for their support to his music career. He even quipped that based on his Facebook fan page, the most numbers of his supporters came from the Philippines.
“Thank you, guys, for being so awesome!”
Other songs included in his album, which he mostly co-wrote with other respected songwriters in the music industry, are “Noise”, “I’ll Be The Light,” “Love has Come for Me,” “Scars,” “Rise,” “Where My Heart Goes,” “This is Who I Am,” “In and Out of Time,” “Let Them See You,” and “The Shape of Your Love.”

ANDREA BOCELLI’s latest offering: “Passione” is a lush collection of Mediterranean love songs featuring duets with global pop stars Jennifer Lopez, Nelly Furtado, and the late Edith Piaf, an album filled with romance and beauty. The album reunites the Italian Tenor with 16-time Grammy Award-winning producer David Foster, who produced Bocelli’s 2006 release “Amore,” which sold more than 4.2 million copies. “Passione” is in essence the second volume of “Amore,” with a “fil rouge” which ideally connects the albums. As with “Amore,” which featured timeless masterworks, “Passione” includes several beloved classics such as “Love Me Tender,” “Girl From Ipanema,” and “Sarà Settembre,” (better known to English-speaking audiences as Neil Diamond’s “September Morn”). Jennifer Lopez is featured on the soft and sensual track “Quizás Quizás Quizás” and Nelly Furtado joins Bocelli on “Corcovado.” The album also features Chris Botti in “When I Fall In Love” and a duet with the late French chanteuse Edith Piaf on the song “La Vie En Rose.” On the album, Bocelli sings in six languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Neapolitan) with his unmistakable voice, as Foster accompanies him on piano, along with Peruvian guitarist Ramon Stagnaro. The sensual sound is rounded out by Cuban, Brazilian, and Portuguese rhythms and a 63-piece orchestra recorded in London.
