MYX Music Awards 2013: An insight to my experienceby Ruby Alvez

“This is awesome!!!”
It’s the first phrase that popped in my head when I was finally inside the Music Museum to witness the annually held MYX Music Awards.  (Well, minus the run-in with the security people. haha!)
I have never been in this “kind” of event, ever before and I was thankful that my friend invited me to come and experience it firsthand.  I was truly hesitant at first (and I even mistook it for another day!), but then I thought, “What the heck, right? It should be fun.”  And fun (and more), it is, indeed.
MYX Music Awards, already on its 8th year, is one of the music industry’s award-giving body in the Philippines, which honors the country’s biggest hitmakers — by giving the viewers the power to decide the winners themselves in 19 categories through SMS and online voting.
The theme of the night was the 80’s and it was great to see some of the artists joining the bandwagon and dressed up for the occasion, led by the VJs themselves who were, I must say, all fabulous.
Beatbox Philippines (who were such scene-stealers!), Yeng Constantino, Princess Velasco, Robin Nievera, Sam Concepcion, Anja Aguilar, KZ Tandingan, Zendee, Kean Cipriano and Elmo Magalona jumpstarted the night by performing the nominees for the Favorite Song category. We also got a taste of Abra’s rapping ingenuity by performing with Rhay Ty, Jose Amarra and Quest.  And of course, a taste of the 80’s via the Neocolours and Menudo’s “If You’re Not Here” with a twist – not only on the song, but the hilarious costume as well – by Kamikazee, Hilera, and Typecast.
But the highlight of my night was the tribute to the MYXMagna Awardee for 2013 – Ms. Lea Salonga.
I had the once-in-a-lifetime chance of watching Lea Salonga when she comprised her role as ‘Kim’ in the well-loved musical ‘Miss Saigon’ when it was brought here in the Philippines back in 2001.  The first musical I ever watched in my life.  And the moment I became a fan of Lea Salonga.
Julie Ann San Jose sang “I Am But A Small Voice”; Erik Santos and K-La Rivera, “A Whole New World”; Juris and Richard Poon, “We Could Be In Love”; Nikki Gil, “Reflection”; and Christian Bautista & Rachelle Ann Go, “Sun And Moon” from the musical “Miss Saigon” were among those who performed to honor Lea Salonga with renditions of her popular songs and then came together to sing “Tagumpay Nating Lahat”.  On a side note, it was delightful to see Lea giggling like a teenager at the sight of Christian Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go singing together.
The internationally acclaimed artist — with a 35-year career to boot — had this to say to those who aspire to join the music industry, “Have an effin’ time doing this.  Love this more than anything else. There can be nothing else. If you have the passion, you belong here.”
Gloc-9 was the biggest winner of the night by bagging three (3) of the awards – Favorite Song (Sirena with Ebe Dancel), Favorite MYX Live! Performance and Favorite Collaboration (Sirena with Ebe Dancel). Sarah Geronimo, Julie Anne San Jose and Abra claimed two awards each, while Christian Bautista, Yeng Constantino and Daniel Padilla were named Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Female Artist and Favorite New Artist, respectively.  Below are the complete list of winners.
It was a stellar night.  A wonderful experience I would love to repeat.  It may be lacking on some parts (more preparation, maybe? and better artists attendance, perhaps? But generally, I think it was a success.  And whoever said that OPM is dead is dead wrong.  It will never die. Seeing the influx of artists – the old and the new – still striving to contribute their earnest talents, I believe that the music industry in the Philippines has come such a long way.

Jason Fernandez: Panimula Album Launch18 Jan 2013 | MetroWalk
Jason Fernandez officially launched his album in Metrowalk last 18 Jan 2013 and he is making music with the new band Sta Maria (Beejay Valero (guitars), Krish Pincaro (keys), Ezekiel Banzuela (bass) and Jared Aquino (drums)), all for one in creating songs and tunes with a hint of Rivermaya sound in the new release as part of his musical influence and evolution as an artist.
In the launch, Dello, MMJ Twins with Caleb, Kimpoy Feliciano, Jordan Bautista and Pio performed for Jason and Sta Maria. Callalily frontman Kean Cipriano, Soupstar Entertainment’s Darwin Hernandez, Orion Entertainment’s Gian Carlo Vizcarra, Universal Record’s Peter Chan were present to support the launch. More photos HERE courtesy of VerJube Photographics.
What’s impresive about the album is Jason’s appreciation of the art, making it mainstream for his local listeners to still access and listen to his craft and imparting  positive musical influences to the next generation.

twinkytunes:

I am big fan of Yend Constantino and a longtime supporter of Parokya ni Edgar so I was excited to hear about this new collaboration!

Even more exciting is knowing that both Chito Miranda and Yeng Constantino are coming to the 3rd ELEMENTS National Singing and Songwriting Camp as Mentors this year!

Today is the last day to apply for the all-expenses paid Camp! So, all of the aspiring Singers Songwriters out there should log on to www.elementsmusiccamp.com.ph NOW and send it their entries!

If you like Chito and Yeng, this is your chance to learn from them directly!

Congratulations to Parokya and Yeng! Love the song!

Sesa: Music for the Youth23 June 2012 | Route 196, QC
So after the Fete dela Musique stopover, we went to Route 196 for Sesa’s gig. It’s our first time at this small yet intimate music venue dedicated for music lovers and music enthusiasts, a Cross and Arrow Events Management productions held last 23 June2012 at Route 196, QC. It’s great to listen to young inspiring musicians including RunManila, Clover Street and One Click Straight who performed to open the stage for Sesa, a project band giving rise to a heartwarming contemporary christian music.
Sta Maria is former Rivermaya vocalist Jason Fernandez (vocals), Beejay Valera (guitars), Krish Pincaro (keyboards), Jared Aquino (drums) and Ezekiel Banzuela (bass). Yahweh (also an original contemporary praise song), Rivermaya’s Elisi, Oasis’ Champagne Supernova and an untitled Yeng Constantino composition were the songs presented to the lively crowd supporters of OPM.

Sesa, the main act of the show composed by Yeng Constantino (vocals), Acel Bisa van Ommen (vocals and rhythm Guitar), Karmi Santiago (drums), Julie Samonte (guitars), and Edrei Olarte (bass), who rendered their own contemporary christian songs, a praise music which empowers the youth in a pop rock tune like Umalab Ka, Liliwanag, Panginoon, Kalasag and Extreme (performed for The Youth Summit 2012). Sesa were formed in 2010, has produced splendid original praise music in 2 years time and now they’re looking forward in compiling their songs to an album soon. Watch out for it! Let me hear those who are excited? Yell!
“Walang matigas na ulo sa mainit na pagmamahal,” Yeng’s greatest, sincerest and most memorable passage I’ve heard that night, very enlightening.

Yeng Constantino being emotional onstage, I liked it because it’s when I get to appreciate more of the songs that she’s singing and feel it right inside my heart. I missed her live performances and hoping to watch her again soon.
