Rivermaya, the iconic and multi-platinum-selling band makes a local recording scene comeback with the much-awaited release of their album Panatang Makabanda, under Universal Records. The album is their first in four years and their first with Universal Records.

Rivermaya is now composed of Mark Escueta, Norby David, Mike Elgar and Ryan Peralta. Photo above by Universal Records.
Checkout Rivermaya’s album single Pilipinas, Kailan Ka Magigising, penned by founding Rivermaya member Mark Escueta, is reminder to everyone to go against crab mentality, and selfishness, especially now that another elections is within the horizon once again. Video by UniversalRecPH.
Pilipinas, Kailan Ka Magigising has been the group’s initial favorite, one of the band’s fun song to play live and a timely song for the upcoming election. Norby adds, “Hopefully our new record can take the fans to a whole new level and attract more new listeners to our songs and stories. We are all excited for what each of us can bring to the table, and soon to your ears.”
When asked to sum up his Rivermaya journey from 1993 to 2013 founding member Mark says: “One of my firm beliefs is that the best part about being a musician is the PROCESS. If you enjoy the process then all your gigs, songs and albums will be celebrations after a great day at the ‘dream office.’ If the process is messed up, many things can go wrong and it can even end up as a painful experience. It has to be good for everybody, not just one or two. Few people know, and I’m sure a lot of my fellow musicians will agree, that one of the most important things that keeps a band going is something that is not so musical in nature. It’s called laughter. A band that laughs together, stays together. Diyan mayaman ang Rivermaya ngayon, tawanan, pagkakaibigan at bagong musika.”

MYX Music Awards 2013: An insight to my experience
by Ruby Alvez
“This is awesome!!!”
It’s the first phrase that popped in my head when I was finally inside the Music Museum to witness the annually held MYX Music Awards. (Well, minus the run-in with the security people. haha!)
I have never been in this “kind” of event, ever before and I was thankful that my friend invited me to come and experience it firsthand. I was truly hesitant at first (and I even mistook it for another day!), but then I thought, “What the heck, right? It should be fun.” And fun (and more), it is, indeed.
MYX Music Awards, already on its 8th year, is one of the music industry’s award-giving body in the Philippines, which honors the country’s biggest hitmakers — by giving the viewers the power to decide the winners themselves in 19 categories through SMS and online voting.
The theme of the night was the 80’s and it was great to see some of the artists joining the bandwagon and dressed up for the occasion, led by the VJs themselves who were, I must say, all fabulous.
Beatbox Philippines (who were such scene-stealers!), Yeng Constantino, Princess Velasco, Robin Nievera, Sam Concepcion, Anja Aguilar, KZ Tandingan, Zendee, Kean Cipriano and Elmo Magalona jumpstarted the night by performing the nominees for the Favorite Song category. We also got a taste of Abra’s rapping ingenuity by performing with Rhay Ty, Jose Amarra and Quest. And of course, a taste of the 80’s via the Neocolours and Menudo’s “If You’re Not Here” with a twist – not only on the song, but the hilarious costume as well – by Kamikazee, Hilera, and Typecast.
But the highlight of my night was the tribute to the MYXMagna Awardee for 2013 – Ms. Lea Salonga.
I had the once-in-a-lifetime chance of watching Lea Salonga when she comprised her role as ‘Kim’ in the well-loved musical ‘Miss Saigon’ when it was brought here in the Philippines back in 2001. The first musical I ever watched in my life. And the moment I became a fan of Lea Salonga.
Julie Ann San Jose sang “I Am But A Small Voice”; Erik Santos and K-La Rivera, “A Whole New World”; Juris and Richard Poon, “We Could Be In Love”; Nikki Gil, “Reflection”; and Christian Bautista & Rachelle Ann Go, “Sun And Moon” from the musical “Miss Saigon” were among those who performed to honor Lea Salonga with renditions of her popular songs and then came together to sing “Tagumpay Nating Lahat”. On a side note, it was delightful to see Lea giggling like a teenager at the sight of Christian Bautista and Rachelle Ann Go singing together.
The internationally acclaimed artist — with a 35-year career to boot — had this to say to those who aspire to join the music industry, “Have an effin’ time doing this. Love this more than anything else. There can be nothing else. If you have the passion, you belong here.”
Gloc-9 was the biggest winner of the night by bagging three (3) of the awards – Favorite Song (Sirena with Ebe Dancel), Favorite MYX Live! Performance and Favorite Collaboration (Sirena with Ebe Dancel). Sarah Geronimo, Julie Anne San Jose and Abra claimed two awards each, while Christian Bautista, Yeng Constantino and Daniel Padilla were named Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Female Artist and Favorite New Artist, respectively. Below are the complete list of winners.
It was a stellar night. A wonderful experience I would love to repeat. It may be lacking on some parts (more preparation, maybe? and better artists attendance, perhaps? But generally, I think it was a success. And whoever said that OPM is dead is dead wrong. It will never die. Seeing the influx of artists – the old and the new – still striving to contribute their earnest talents, I believe that the music industry in the Philippines has come such a long way.

With my delayed posts regarding our Subic adventure, I’m sharing you this OPM song which tells the world why It’s More Fun in the Philippines. It’s More Fun in the Philippines is the domestic jingle of Department of Tourism’s campaign for the Philippines, performed by Jay Padua, a song written by Tin Sanchez with the music of Mike Villegas. And for how many times I’ve heard it , I remembered having an LSS for this song at the entire Subic trip. Video below courtesy of alexbam2006.
Every once in awhile we had a chance to travel, we make sure to learn more about the world and to slow time down. Travelling with friends has always been fantastic fun, it’s the best way to discover more about them and meet new people as well while exploring a new unknown territory. It reminds me of world class performer El Gamma Penumbra’s music video showing the beauty and natural wonders of the Philippines through the group’s shadow theater performance. Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas was written by Robert Labaye and performed by Angeline Quinto. Video below by choosephils.
Also, you might want to appreciate Pilipinas Tara Na! which has 3 versions with performances by 57 leading musical artists and entertainment personalities, lyrics by Rene Nieva, Mike Villegas and Rico Blanco composition, arranged by Angelo Villegas.
